A study on awareness of development education issues

 

One of events within the framework of the project “Schools as satellites in development education” includes a study on awareness of development or global education issues. The study consists of 3 surveys – in the project beginning, in the middle and after completion. The objective of the research requires to obtain information allowing to assess and to analyze awareness of development education issues among participants of the project “Schools as satellites in development education”, to assess changes in their knowledge and awareness during the project, and generally to develop an overview of public awareness, attitude, understanding and knowledge about development issues. The study involves both project participants (representatives of nine school teams) and representatives of project schools and local communities.

The first survey has been performed before familiarizing project participants with topic of development, namely, in March 2010 during Winter school of the project. It shows the opinion of respondents, for instance, on importance of being aware about issues of international development, influence of personal activities on general worldwide processes, attitude to globalization and on need to teach worldwide processes in school.

The second survey has been performed in October 2010. Specific aim of this survey conducted in October, 2010 was to assess the change among the target groups, and to compare them with the data of the survey conducted in March, 2010. Consequently, change in general knowledge, as well as opinions were measured among the direct and indirect target groups (pupils and teachers) and within the total sample population.

Aim of the survey: To obtain information allowing to assess and analyze awareness of development or global education issues among direct and indirect target groups of the project “Schools as satellites in development education”, as well as to carry out repeated measurements in the middle and after completion of the project in order to assess changes in knowledge and awareness (informative efficiency of the project).

Tasks of the survey:

  • to ascertain attitude of target groups to importance for people to be aware and informed about international development issues, and arguments assessment (tangible/intangible);
  • to find out the level of awareness of target group representatives about development or global education;
  • to ascertain understanding of development or global education definition by target group representatives;
  • to assess self-valuation among target group representatives about awareness about different aspects of development education;
  • to find out opinion of target group on the level of impact of each personal actions on overall worldwide processes;
  • to find out attitude of target groups towards globalization;
  • to find out interest of target groups towards events at their domicile, region, state, Europe and world in general;
  • to find out, whether schoolchildren would like to learn about worldwide processes in school, and what exactly;
  • to find out teachers opinion on what exactly schoolchildren would learn more about worldwide processes;
  • to find out teachers opinion how issues of development or global education could be integrated in school (as a separate subject or included in other subjects) and from what form children could start education about worldwide processes;
  • to find out what share of subject standard presently is devoted to development or global education issues;
  • to ascertain socially-demographic characteristics of direct and indirect target group (sex, age, residence etc.).

Method of the survey: Surveys in Latvian to be filled individually.

Amount of sampling population: Totally ~ 300 filled out surveys have been obtained (some surveys have been incomplete, therefore membership of certain respondents to target groups and/or socially demographic groups could not be established) in each survey, including direct target group (project participants) indirect target group (participants in formal and informal education activities), pedagogues and schoolchildren.
